Self-Reported Risk Factors

Cancer risk is affected by various controllable and uncontrollable factors. In addition, there are numerous types of cancer, all of which have several known and unknown risk factors. Because of this, it is not possible to exactly determine specific cancer risks. Yet, an overview of known factors that were assessed in the Health Risk Assessment is as follows.

Uncontrollable factors that can affect cancer risk are family history, age, race, and sex. For almost all cancers, risk increases with age. Certain cancers are more prevalent in certain races. The same is true with gender. For many types of cancer, a family history of that cancer type increases risk for development of the disease.

Three Rivers District Health Department's overall cancer score is 69. This took into account the uncontrollable factors listed above, as well as a person's personal history. Some forms of cancer have directly affected 6.9% of Three Rivers District Health Department's population. Breast cancer runs in 8.9%, and Ovarian Cancer runs in 3% of Three Rivers District Health Department's employees families, while Colon or Rectal cancers run in 6.9% of the participant's families.
