The number one killer among women is heart disease; however, it usually does not occur until after menopause. Many types of cancer also affect women.

Of the 1,483 female participants in this assessment, 87.5% have had a Pap smear within the past 3 years. Adult women should have annual pap smears, which are the leading screening tool for cervical cancer.

Women over the age of 40 were assessed for their last mammogram and digital rectal exam. A digital rectal exam has been administered in 52.8% of this population within the last two years. A mammogram has been administered within the last two years in 80.2% of this population. Presently, it is not recommended that women under the age of 40 get mammograms unless they are considered high risk for breast cancer; in which case, a mammogram schedule should be established with a physician. Annual mammograms are recommended for women over the age of 40 to detect breast tumors or problems that could indicate breast cancer. Of the assessed Three Rivers District Health Department female population, 9.8% have at least one immediate relative who has had breast cancer.
