Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death in U.S. teenagers; about 2500 deaths per year. SK3R is working to create safer passengers by promoting a web-based program called Countdown2Drive. Countdown2Drive seeks to build a trusting relationship between parents and teens. This program helps the parent and teen put together an agreement outlining the guidelines for pre-teens and teens that can be specifically tailored to your family.
Research shows that as kids age they are less likely to wear seat belts and are more likely to participate in risky behaviors that could influence their safety on the road. Countdown2Drive highlights 5 safety behaviors for the parent to discuss with their teen so there is no confusion as the teen spends more time away from the parent and more time with their peers. These behaviors include:
- Always wear a seat belt
- Never distract the driver
- Never ride with a driver who has been drinking or taking drugs
- Never ride with drivers who have too little experience
- Avoid drivers they know are unsafe
