Sexually Transmitted Infections

STIs:

  • STIs are very common; many people with STIs show no symptoms of their infection.
  • You and your partner should be tested before any unprotected sex.
  • Testing most often only requires a urine sample for men and women.
  • Practice safe sex by always using a condom.
  • Symptoms may include burning with urination, abnormal discharge, bumps, rashes, blisters, etc.
  • Birth control may prevent pregnancy but (other than condoms) does not prevent STIs. GET TESTED!!!

HIV:

  • HIV is the virus that causes AIDS.
  • The virus can have no symptoms for up to 10 years or more.
  • HIV can be spread during vaginal and anal sex. It's possible to spread HIV through oral sex, but it is less likely.
  • There is NO cure, but treatment is available to slow the progress.
  • Condoms offer good protection against HIV/AIDS, but you should be tested before any unprotected sex.
